In March, our middle school students had an incredible experience at the Montessori Model United Nations conference in New York City. Dr. Blanchard, middle school Humanities teacher, and Head of School, Barbara Orlowitz, accompanied the students as they represented the Republic of Panama and the Republic of Zambia. In preparation for this international event, students spent months researching complex global topics including Human Rights and Climate Change, Human Genome and Editing, Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems, Advancement of Women, and Children in Conflict. This yearlong project culminated in their participation at the three day conference, where they stepped into the role of United Nations delegates and experienced how countries work together to address global challenges.
During the conference, students worked alongside delegates from Montessori schools across the country and around the world. They debated important global issues, collaborated to draft solutions, and ultimately helped adopt resolutions designed to address these challenges. It was inspiring to watch our students confidently speak, share ideas, and thoughtfully represent their assigned countries while engaging in meaningful discussions with their peers.
Beyond the committee sessions, the experience offered many opportunities for personal growth. Students strengthened their public speaking skills, made new friends, and experienced the energy of New York City together while learning to navigate a busy city environment. Experiences like MMUN bring learning to life and help students see themselves as thoughtful global citizens who can make a difference.
Here are a few reflections from our students about their experience:
“MMUN gave me the ability to feel confident in my thoughts and my ability to speak out loud. When I went to the conference, I felt confident and that helped me be part of creating our resolution.”
“The MMUN trip helped me realize the problems in the world and how young people can work together to solve them. Around us were Montessori students from around the world, all excited and prepared to help change the world. This trip has really taught me how to make new friends in an unfamiliar environment.”
“This MMUN trip made me more independent, and it allowed me to present my own ideas.”
“MMUN was an amazing experience that had a lot of opportunities to voice your opinion and meet new people. It was also a time to bond with my classmates.”
