Land Study: ASM’s Vegetable Gardens

September 20, 2024

Maria Montessori believed that the hand is a real-life focal point for a successful and fulfilling life. Our unique ‘Land Study’ program embodies this spirit. Inspired by Maria Montessori’s advocacy for outdoor learning, this program offers students enriching experiences that foster an appreciation for nature and develop essential life skills. Working collaboratively in the garden, students not only enhance their communication and teamwork abilities but also connect with their environment in meaningful ways.

In our school vegetable garden, you’ll see Upper Elementary and Middle School students deeply involved in the hands-on learning process, benefitting from the fruits of their labor.

The spring season is an important time for our outdoor environmental activities that are crucial to our educational philosophy. Under the minimal supervision of their inspiring teacher, Richelle Records, the students test the soil, till it, and prepare the beds for planting. It is clear to any observer that these students thrive on responsibility, managing their tasks with serious commitment and evident joy.

During the spring, summer, and fall seasons, students engage in weekly maintenance such as weeding, pruning, mulching, and composting. In the fall, students harvest and sample the fruits and vegetables. Recently, students harvested potatoes, which were then utilized to make potato latkes for group snack; a weekly practical life activity.

Throughout this experience, students are engaged in conversations about conservation and sustainability. Ms. Records, reports that “Land study is an ideal way for students to engage in the seed to table process of gardening. From weeding and planting seeds to observing their growth and harvesting, students get a sense of where food comes from and how much work goes into it.” Through the process they develop a deeper understanding and respect for farmers and our planet’s resources.

The benefits of such experiences are many and integral to our curriculum at ASM. We ensure every student recognizes the value of their environment and learns to protect and appreciate the natural world.
