Positivity, Routines, and Expectations

The start of the school year is always filled with anticipation and energy! It has been wonderful to reconnect with familiar faces and welcome new students across all program levels. I am incredibly thankful for our dedicated faculty and staff who have been working diligently to establish a positive and supportive classroom environment.

During these initial weeks, we focus on setting up routines and expectations that will guide us throughout the year. By creating a structured and predictable atmosphere, students feel more comfortable and are encouraged to bring their best selves to class. When students have a say and take part in shaping these guidelines, they gain a sense of ownership and are more inclined to actively participate in maintaining a positive learning environment.

For example, students in Upper Elementary have been involved in drafting a classroom constitution, where they explore what makes a peaceful and productive classroom. Some of the expectations they created include being mindful while others are working to maintain a productive environment, helping others, and listening when others are speaking. These discussions help build a collaborative spirit and a proactive approach to problem-solving. In Lower Elementary, students also benefit from established routines and discussions about classroom expectations, all of which foster independence, responsibility, and respect for one another. In the Children’s House, our youngest learners start their day by hanging their belongings on their hooks and then heading outside for recess. After recess, they gather to review the calendar and discuss the weather. Grace and courtesy lessons are introduced, with teachers modeling these behaviors with children, helping them learn how to interact respectfully and kindly with others. They also learn about new works that are being introduced to the classroom, engaging in activities that align with the Montessori principles of independence, self-directed learning, and hands-on experience. These consistent routines help them know what to expect and provide a sense of structure, which is crucial for their development and comfort.

We value the role that parents play in supporting these efforts at home. By establishing consistent routines and involving your children in decision-making, you reinforce the importance of responsibility and cooperation. Together, by fostering these habits both at school and at home, we create a nurturing environment where every student can grow and succeed.
