Andover School of Montessori’s Learning Specialists play an important role in empowering students as they work to reach their individual academic and personal goals. The Learning Specialists at ASM work closely with parents, teachers, and students to provide unified and accommodating academic plans to support students in their day-to-day learning and development. Working alongside program level directors and teachers, our Learning Specialists examine students’ individual progress and experiences to identify a plan of support to reach each student’s academic, social, and emotional needs. This may include new instructional strategies, individualized academic interventions and/or, individualized emotional and behavioral support.
Our learning specialists provide small group support services to students who need additional academic support. Areas of intervention include:
- Reading groups focusing on decoding, fluency, and comprehension
- Writing support focusing on writing development, tone, and writing genres
- Math review and exploration of concepts ranging from number sense to high level mathematical reasoning
- Social-Emotional Learning and Social Pragmatics
- Executive Functioning support
Learning Specialist support is determined by the learning specialists, classroom teachers, parents, DIBELS literacy assessments, and academic evaluation recommendations. Our Learning Specialists attend program-level meetings, work closely with teachers, and update parents when needed.
In addition to providing academic and social emotional support to students with individual challenges, our Learning Specialists provide weekly executive functioning and social-emotional classes to all students in our Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School programs. Social-Emotional Learning is provided to all Children’s House classrooms on a monthly basis.
Together with our teachers and administrators, our Learning Specialists ensure that each student has the opportunity to thrive and grow at ASM.
