Halloween Fair: A Tradition of Student Leadership and Community Fun

Each year, the Halloween Fair is a highly anticipated occasion at ASM, and it’s entirely planned and organized by our middle school students. This year, our 6th-year students have enthusiastically stepped up to the challenge, working together to bring this beloved tradition to life. This event highlights a tradition of student leadership and community fun.

In true Montessori fashion, we emphasize fostering independence, allowing students to take ownership of their learning and responsibilities. By planning, organizing, and implementing the Halloween Fair, our 6th-year students are not only learning practical life skills, but they are also gaining confidence to lead, make decisions, and solve problems. This experience encourages them to step out of their comfort zones and develop a sense of agency, essential qualities that will serve them well in future endeavors.

As the oldest in our school, the 6th years have taken their role as event organizers seriously, collaborating with their teachers to design creative booths and games that will engage and entertain our younger students. Throughout this experience, the 6th years are honing vital skills like teamwork, communication, and the ability to consider and incorporate others’ ideas. The Halloween Fair not only gives them an opportunity to lead but also creates a joyful space for the entire community to connect with others. Younger students will bond over shared experiences, and parents and friends will have the chance to socialize while enjoying festivities.

Additionally, the Halloween Fair serves as a fundraiser to help support the costs of the overnight field trips. Students are responsible for raising some of the money to fund these trips, giving them a real-world opportunity to understand the value of contributing to their own experiences. By taking on the responsibility of planning and raising funds, they are learning valuable life skills that will benefit them well beyond the classroom.
