Every year in Kindergarten, students engage in a fascinating, year-long unit of study in life science about the major organs in the human body. The project begins with each child being traced to create a life-sized outline of their own body. From there, the learning truly comes to life.
As students explore different organs and body systems, they add each new one to their body outline. With every lesson, their understanding grows, and their models become more detailed. Through hands-on experiments, discussions, and observation, they are learning not only where organs are located but also how they work together to keep our bodies healthy and strong.
Right now, students are studying the heart. They are learning about its chambers and valves and how it pumps blood throughout the entire body. Watching their curiosity and excitement as they discover how this powerful organ works has been truly wonderful.
This long-term project gives students the opportunity to revisit their work throughout the year, deepening their understanding as they build this picture of the human body. It is a beautiful reminder of just how magical and complex our bodies truly are.
