The beginning of a new school year is an important time for our students. While there is excitement in seeing friends, meeting teachers, and beginning new work, these first weeks also give children the opportunity to learn routines, understand expectations, and begin building the independence that will support them throughout the year.
As I visited classrooms this week, I enjoyed listening to some of the conversations taking place. I heard students talking with their teachers and one another about what it means to be respectful, how we care for our classroom, and what each person can do to help create a positive community. What struck me is that these conversations were happening across different ages. Whether a child is in preschool or middle school, knowing what is expected and understanding why those expectations matter provides an important foundation for the year.
This is very much a part of the Montessori classroom, where independence, choice, and responsibility go hand in hand. As I shared in my previous Head of School message, our theme this year is Together, We Grow. Children grow not only through academic learning, but also by learning to respect one another, care for their environment, make thoughtful choices, and contribute to their community. By providing clear expectations while giving children increasing independence, we help them discover what they are capable of.
These first weeks are just the beginning. I am looking forward to spending time in our classrooms throughout the year, getting to know your children even better, and watching them grow in confidence, independence, and responsibility.
